How did Romans prepare their food? Back One
Pottery bowl
This bowl could have been used for storing, cooking or mixing food. A cover could have been put on top of it to keep out dust or insects.
Mortarium
A mortarium was used to grind up herbs and spices. They can also be used for making sauces and soft cheese. They were used rather like we use food processors in our kitchens today!
Quernstones
Every kitchen needed grindstones like these to crush wheat into flour for making bread. They are made of very hard stone.
Kitchen pottery
These pottery jugs, bowls and dishes were found at Fishbourne Roman Palace, and were used in the kitchens there. They were used to prepare, store and cook food. The pots were made on a potter’s wheel.
