285- Diocletian declared Emperor. In 286 Maximian became ruler of the western Empire. 238-284 - A general period of unrest, when 19 Emperors came and went. 235- Maximinus Emperor. 222 - Severus Alexander Emperor. 217-219- Macrinus and Elagabalus declared Emperors. 211 - Caracalla Emperor 211 - Severus dies at York. He was preparing to continue with his military campaign in Scotland. 286-96 - Power struggle in Britain. Both Carausius and then Allectus declared themselves Emperors and took control of Britain. Allectus was then defeated by the legitimate deputy Emperor Constantius c.280-90 - Britain re-organised into four provinces. Britannia Prima (ruled trom Cirencester), Maxima Caesariensis (London), Britannia Secunda (York) and Flavia Caesariensis (Lincoln). c,259-274 - Britain forms part of the breakaway Gallic Empire. It is eventually restored to the main Empire by Emperor Aurelian. c.293 - Saxon Shore Fort at Pevensey built. c.285 - Fishbourne villa destroyed by fire c.260 - Coastal villas start to decline. Iron-working sites also decline.

Towards the end of the 3rd century AD, many of the rich villas near to the Sussex coast went into decline. The same also happened to many of the iron-working sites. This could have been in part because of barbarian raids from across the channel.
