| Introduction | |||
| Until the Roman invasion in AD43 written language was almost unknown. However there are many examples of formal and informal writing during the Roman period, although unfortunately many have disappeared. Only those written on pottery and stone have survived in Sussex. |

| New roads and efficient transport were essential for the Roman Army which had to cover long distances during the conquest of Britain. Afterwards the roads were used by traders and others, as they travelled to markets and towns. Boats and ships used rivers and the sea for transporting heavy goods where possible. | |||
