Introduction
Although some large and luxurious villas were built in Sussex soon after the Roman invasion, it appears that most people continued to live in much smaller homes. These are difficult to identify archaeologically, because they were often constructed of wood, daub and thatch, which leave little or no trace in the soil. In the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, some landowners became wealthier and either built new villas or enlarged existing ones.
