| Introduction |
|
| Chichester (Noviomagus Reginorum)
is the only Roman town known in Sussex. It was founded on an earlier military
base, which had been built just after the invasion in AD 43. |
|
| |
| The town would have been an important
centre for trade, collecting taxes, local justice and administration. |
| |
| Two important roads cross at
its centre: Stane
Street connecting Southampton (Clausentum) and London (Londinium);
and a north-south road connecting Silchester (Calleva Atrebatum)
and Selsey. |
| |
| The town was protected by earth
bank defences, which were strengthened at the end of the third century
with massive stone walls. Luxury town houses were constructed in the 3rd
and 4th centuries inside the city walls. |
