Question: How was plumbing and heating installed?

Hypocaust tile
Many of these tiles would have been cemented together to form small columns called pilae. The pilae raised the floor so that hot air could pass underneath.

Box flue tile
This hollow tile was part of a Roman chimney. Tiles were placed on top of each other, along the walls of rooms, behind the plaster. Hot air from under the floor moved up through the box flue tiles to the roof. Box flue tiles have scratched lines on them to help the plaster stick to them.

Lead pipes
Lead pipes were used in villas to carry water, just as we have pipes in houses today. This pipe took overflow water from a small inside pool (piscina) to a drain.

Ceramic pipes
This is a length of water pipe, which originally lay beneath the great Roman gardens at Fishbourne Palace. A network of such pipes was used to supply the gardens with fresh water, and make sure that the basins and fountains were properly filled.
