| Question:
What urban features have been found in Chichester? |

| Map of Roman Chichester |
| This map shows the outline of the Roman town of Noviomagus (Chichester). There were two main streets, just as in the town today, with other streets leading off them. Only a small part of the town has been investigated, but this includes the public bathhouse, town houses and cemeteries outside the walls. The forum must have been in the centre of town, and a large temple probably lay to the north. |

| Bathhouse Cistern |
| The water supply for Roman Chichester was obtained by digging wells in the ground. This photograph shows archaeologists excavating the main well (cistern) of the public bathhouse. They are lifting out the wooden planks that lined the well. Water would have been pumped up into a tank, and then gone into the bathhouse through many lead pipes. |

| Gatehouse |
| The four main entrances to the town would each have had a gatehouse. This is a drawing of the Eastgate in 1782. The Roman gate may have looked similar to this, with a wide entrance for horses and carts, and a smaller entrance for people. |
