| Question:
How did people light and heat their homes? |

| Bignor Hypocaust |
| This is a hypocaust at Bignor Roman villa. You can see that the floor is raised so that hot air can pass underneath. This air then passed up through hollow tiles in the walls so the whole room became warm. Hypocausts are usually only found in a small number of rooms in the villa. |

| Oil Lamp |
| The artificial light in a house may have come from oil lamps like this one from Eastbourne. Olive oil was poured into the central hole and a wick placed in the spout would soak it up. An oil lamp can stay alight for hours, but you would need several of them to light up a room at night. |

| Glass hanging lamp |
| This lamp was hung from the ceiling by three cords tied to its handles. It probably used olive oil. |
