Question: What luxury fittings did wealthy villas have?

Window glass
This is a piece of window glass from Chilgrove villa. Windows were usually only found in wealthy houses.

Opus sectile floor
This is a section of tiled floor known as opus sectile, from the earliest palace at Fishbourne. Some of the tiles came from the Mediterranean region, and must have been imported for the building of the palace.

Bird & basket cornice
This is a decorated piece of plaster (stucco) that would have run along the top corners of the room. It has the imprint of birds and fruit baskets on it.

Ganymede mosaic
Wealthy houses would usually have contained mosaic floors. This is a particularly fine example from Bignor, showing the Greek hero Ganymede being carried away by the god Zeus in the form of an eagle.

Piscina
Some wealthy houses may have had indoor pools (piscinae) and fountains (fons), like this one at Bignor.
