| Question:
What techniques were used for making clothes? |
| |
| |
| Spindle whorls |
| These are two spindle whorls, one of them attached to a modern spindle (stick). The process of making woollen and linen clothes began with washing and combing the wool and linen. Then they had to be spun into a thread, like modern knitting wool. Spindle whorls acted as a weight to help spin the thread. |
|
| Loomweight |
| After wool was spun, it was made into cloth on a wooden frame called a loom. This round stone loomweight was attached to threads on a loom, and kept them hanging straight. |
|
| Sewing needles |
| These two sewing needles could have been used sew, mend or even decorate clothes. |
