Question: What kitchen equipment was used to prepare food?

Coarseware pots
Here is a range of pots, jugs and dishes that would have been found in the kitchens at Fishbourne Roman Palace in the 2nd century AD.

Mortarium
This is a mortarium, used for grinding up herbs and spices, and for making sauces. They were essential pieces of Roman kitchen equipment.

Quernstone
Every kitchen needed grindstones like these to crush wheat into flour for making bread. They are made of very hard stone.

Cheesepress
This part of a cheese press. Thick cream was poured into the bowl, and the liquid (whey) drained through the holes.

Colander
A colander, used for draining or sieving food.

Funnel
This is a very unusual piece of kitchen equipment. It may have been used as a steamer for vegetables, with the funnel resting inside a cooking pot and with a lid on top.

Knife
The remains of a knife, with most of the iron blade rusted away. Knives would have been commonly used in the kitchen.
