| Question:
What types of coins have been found in Roman Sussex? |

1st to 4th century coins
These coins from the Bodiam region are made of silver and bronze, and relate to emperors’ reigns from left to right as follows: Domitian (81-96), Antoninus Pius (138-161), Maximinus (235-238), and Constantine I (306-337). The denarius from Maximinus’ reign contains much less silver than the one from Domitian’s reign. Can you work out why?

Coin hoard
A hoard of late 3rd century coins, buried near to a Romano-British farm at Bullock Down. There were other similar hoards found nearby, and they were all probably hidden at a time of great unrest in Britain.

4th century coins
This is a selection of 4th century AD coins, found at Batten Hanger villa. From left to right: Constantine I (313-37), Valens (364-78), Valentinian II (375-92) and three very small late 4th century coins known as minims. The smallest minim is only 2 mm in diameter.
