Question: How did the Romans decorate luxury objects?

Askos handle
This is the handle of a wine jug called an askos. It is skilfully made and decorated with the face of Bacchus, the god of wine. A similar example of an askos was found at Pompeii.

Medusa stud
This stud is made from cast bronze, and is a model of the head of Medusa. It may have been a fitting on a small box, perhaps a jewellery box.

Bottle stopper
This ceramic bottle stopper has been made in the shape of a woman’s head. It measures about 50mm long.

Samian dish
This part of a samian dish shows the winged god, Mercury. He was known as the messenger of the gods, but was also the god of commerce, and very popular in Britain!

Face vase
This is part of a type of vase which is not often found in Britain. It is called a face vase because of its decoration. Most face vases came from Germany, and often had inscriptions on them. They were probably used as religious offerings.
