| Question:
What other finds have religious associations? |
| |
| |
| Mini scabbard |
| This mini scabbard probably had a blade in it. Similar scabbards have been found on military sites in Europe, and they were probably good luck charms (amulets). |
|
| Bloodstone arrowhead |
| This arrowhead made from stone could never have been used and is more likely to have been a charm or religious (votive) offering. It was found at Bosham where there was probably a temple. |
|
| Model leg |
| This crudely made clay leg was found at the temple site at Muntham Court. If a person was ill in Roman times, they may have made a model of the affected part of the body. This was then offered at a temple or shrine, in the hope of a cure. |
|
| Sceptre pommel |
| This is probably part of a sceptre, or ceremonial stick, found at Muntham Court. It may well have been part of a priest’s equipment. |
|
| Bronze stag |
| This rare bronze stag may have been a cult object from a shrine or temple. |
|
| Boar plaque |
| Boar figurines are quite common in Sussex, but this bronze plaque from Muntham Court is a more unusual representation of a boar. Hunting was popular, but it may also have had religious meaning. |
