Question: What unusual or imported goods were found in burials?

Eagle talon
This would have been worn on a necklace as a charm. The talon was placed on the chest of a woman who must have been of high rank.

Antler object
This rare antler object is a mystery! Could it be a catapult or a ritual object? It was found buried with a girl aged about 11-13, and was placed just above her head.

Beads
These beads are made of amber, a hard resin imported from the Baltic and Scandinavia. There is a crystal bead in the centre.

Cowrie shell
This is part of a cowrie shell, probably worn as a charm by its female owner. Cowries like this are only found in the Indian Ocean, so it is evidence of long distance trade in the early Saxon period. It was probably very valuable, so marked the high status of its owner.

Egyptian goblet
This beautiful glass goblet was made in Egypt at the start of the 5th century. It has a hunting scene around the sides, and a Greek inscription that reads: ‘'Use me and good health to you'. It was buried with a wealthy Saxon.
