| Question:
What weapons did Roman soldiers use? |

Gladius
The top picture shows an iron gladius, which was found in Chichester. It was a short sword used for stabbing, and was part of a legionary’s equipment in 1st and 2nd century AD. The lower picture shows what it would have looked like in its original state.

Spear
This is the iron tip of a Roman spear. A long wooden shaft would have fitted into the hole (socket) in one end. It may either have been used by soldiers in battle, or for hunting wild animals.

Bolthead
This is the iron tip of a Roman bolt, which would have originally fitted onto a short wooden shaft. The bolt would probably have been fired by artillery such as a ballista, which was a type of large crossbow.
