Caburn

A dome-shaped hilltop settlement (c.1.9 ha internal area), dominating the Lower Ouse valley in East Sussex. Intermittent occupation from the Bronze Age. In the late Iron Age it was an enclosed settlement, with 12 potin coins found in pits - possibly part of a range of structured (ritual?) deposits at the site. Romano-British use of Caburn was within an agricultural landscape of mixed farming. The nearest farm was at Ranscombe. The ramparts were partially reconstructed in late Roman-early Saxon period.
