Bishopstone

A hilltop settlement site overlooking the English channel, with a long history of intermittent occupation, from the Neolithic to early Saxon periods. The open late Iron Age settlement was enclosed in the early Roman period (c.75 x 50 m), with many signs of agricultural activity within. This lessened in the later 2nd and 3rd centuries, but resumed in the 4th century, when many pits, two structures and a corn-drying oven were built. Occupation probably continued into the early 5th century, albeit in a reduced state. Finally, an early Anglo-Saxon (5th century) settlement was built, although there is little evidence for continuity with the Romano-British site. A Saxon cemetery lay just outside the settlement, which may have had over sixty structures. Both date to the 5th and 6th centuries.
