| A site on the South Downs with a long period of use, ranging from the Bronze Age to the late Roman period, although their was a lack of activity between c.100 BC and the later 1st century AD. In the early Roman period, two Bronze Age barrows were defined by an enclosure ditch (c.50 x 32 m), possibly marking out a ritual site. By the end of the 2nd century, occupation debris occurred to the east of the early ditch, and in the 4th century, the ditches were filled in, and a post-holed structure was erected around the barrows. Structured deposits of animal bones and coins may suggest that the sanctity of the site continued. The structure was taken down in the later 4th century, although occupation continued at the site. |
