Sussex
has a rich heritage of archaeological remains, from the internationally
renowned site at Boxgrove, which contained the earliest hominid in Britain,
to a string of Second World War defence emplacements along the coastline.
This website is concerned with the period dating approximately 100 BC to AD 700 (late Iron Age - early Saxon), an era that has produced a wealth of archaeological sites and finds. Before examining this in more detail, it worth looking briefly into how archaeology has developed in the region over the past few centuries, and what state it is in today. |
