Introduction

View of South Downs from the Trundle Roman Britain was essentially a rural society, with the vast majority of the population living in farms and small settlements away from the urban centres. Aside from agriculture, a wide range of activities occurred in rural settings, from mining and manufacturing to hunting and fishing.

Patterns of settlement in Sussex varied across the county. Certain areas to the west and south contained a much greater concentration of villas, roads and other settlements, while much of the Weald seems to have had more thinly spaced settlement connected to the iron industry, perhaps as part of an imperial estate (see Craft & Industry).
