Other nucleated settlement

There are no other settlements in Sussex that can really be accorded an urban status. The mansios, or posting stations, along Stane Street at Hardham and Alfoldean may both have had associated settlements, but they were comparatively small and are unlikely to have had many civic amenities. The roadside settlement at Hassocks could well have been larger, but aside from the cemetery, it lies mostly unexcavated, and was certainly not on a scale approaching Chichester.

Most Roman settlement in Sussex was not urban in character, but consisted of small farmsteads and loose collections of houses focusing upon agricultural or industrial activities.
