| The Suburbs | |||
Throughout
the 1st to 4th centuries, small 'suburban' domestic and industrial areas
spread along the roads from the town, which were formally excluded when
the town walls were built in the late 2nd century AD. The largest and
most important of these suburbs was outside the east gate, to the south
of St Pancras cemetery, on the site of the present Cattlemarket (see
'Chichester (Cattlemarket)' in the database).
