| There are a number
of impressive Iron Age hillforts on the Sussex South Downs, many of which
were later associated with Romano-British activity. Commanding among the
most extensive views of the Downs are the earthworks at Cissbury Ring
and nearby Chanctonbury Ring. The Cissbury hillfort is under National
Trust ownership, and has a carpark nearby at Findon Valley off the A24.
Chanctonbury is rather more difficult to get to, but can be walked to
from Cissbury. For more information on these sites see www.findon.com Devil's Dyke near Fulking is another hillfort site with spectacular views across the Downs, and is easily accessible, although parking is difficult in summer. It is signposted off the A27 and A23. Finally, there is the hillfort at Highdown Hill between Littlehampton and Worthing, just south of the A27. The site of an early Iron Age hillfort, late Roman bathhouse and early Anglo-Saxon cemetery, it commands extensive views over the Sussex coastline. |
