There
is an extensive network of Roman roads in Sussex, some lying under
modern roads, others existing as faint tracks. The most well known
of all Sussex roads is Stane Street, linking London to Chichester,
and much of this is still visible and in use today.
A good section to visit is in Eartham Wood, about 5 km north of Fontwell
(OS ref: SU 945110), where it is used as a bridle path. A deliberately
preserved section of road showing some iron slag metalling can be
found at Holtye, just south of the A264 along a footpath. For a comprehensive
selection of twenty Roman road routes, see Alex Vincent's 'Roman Roads
of Sussex', published by Middleton Press (2000).
